Post COVID Child Development

PIVOT.

March 15, 2020, marked a sharp and distinct shift for children in Alberta. That is the day they announced in person learning would be suspended and all parents became instant home school education facilitators, in addition to their regular duties AND dealing with the stress of a global pandemic.

Pivot is the word that rang through the media and education system. It was a necessary pivot but … not necessarily a welcome pivot.

Every child’s learning needs, educational trajectory and ability to shift to a more self-motivated learning environment created significant challenges for parents, children/teens and families. And even when the children returned to school, they are masked, have cohort learning groups, no more assemblies, and forced 2 week quarantines peppered through the school year. Amongst this they are also experiencing divisiveness in their communities, conflicting messaging through media, shifting restrictions and evolving information constantly.

For many parents, understanding how this pivot has influenced and will influence their child is important. Many are wondering what the consequences and remedies will be?

These are questions we don’t have answers for yet. But if you are concerned with how your child, teen, or family has managed to pivot please feel free to reach out and book an appointment. We truly are in this together and, although I may not be able to offer answers, I am trained to recognize warning signs. At minimum, if the pivot was hard and/or remains hard, please reach out. You are not alone. We truly are in this together.

Let's start working together!
