Motherhood is a culture unto itself with the entrance requirement of a baby or child. But … are you a mom when your arms are empty?
Motherhood is a simple world filled with romantic notions reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. When it comes easily it seems to be a simple concept: have a child whether through birth or adoption and you are a mother.
But for those women experiencing the grief of loss due to infertility, miscarriage or stillbirth the concept of motherhood becomes significantly more complex. This is keenly experienced on Mother’s Day; one of the hardest days of the year for mothers with empty arms.
I have coined the phrase “Earned Motherhood” to acknowledge that moms with empty arms are indeed mothers. Although the term may be clumsy and overly simplistic … it is a start. If you are struggling with empty arms you are not alone and understanding support is available.
And next Mothers Day please acknowledge your Earned Motherhood; you are a mom.
